Swine Flu Protect Yourself Build Your Immune System

The first outbreaks of swine flu are upon us. However, it is to soon to tell how powerful it will really be or how dangerous. Many governments and experts are warning us of a coming pandemic. These warnings have been given in recent history and nothing ever happened. Example the avian flu of the last three years. It can of course spread throughout the world easily, and may do so or not. On the plus side, people who prepare their immune systems will probably get through it without problems.

This virus is a very unusual one and has a combination of four different gene segments. This virus is termed A-H1N1. The combination is from North American swine, bird and human flu strains and a segment from Eurasian swine. Because of this it is very worrisome to health organizations because it is a descendant of the 1917 pandemic strain. Many organizations and governments are saying that it could approach the Spanish flu pandemic of 1917-1918.

Our government and others are now trying to do something, anything to stem the spread of the virus. You may see such actions as closed airports, restricted travel, and the shutting down of public events. This has already started in Texas where high school events are being canceled. Knowing our government you have not seen anything yet. You might even see forced vaccination.

It will be almost impossible to contain a human-to-human transmission of this airborne pathogen. One airline passenger could spread the virus around the world in a day, or two and no one would know it. Doctor Rowan states "trying to contain an easily spread virus is nuts. Instead, you must take action now - the right action.

What is the right action you ask? It is not panic action but positive action, to get the correct information of what can help your body protect itself from the swine flu. One positive action is to do everything you can to strengthen your immune system. You should not wait until the people around you are showing symptoms or are already sick. Start now. Below are ideas and suggestions complied from a number of MD's who specialize in alternative and nutritional medicine. All of these ingredients are available from retail stores, the internet or from me.

It is advisable to eat as well as you can. Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables especially those high in antioxidants. Take whole food supplements high in antioxidants. Find a good herbal immune formula like Immunex which is the one I take. Dr Frank Shallenberger recommends taking as a preventative a product called Epicor. My research shows this to be very effective. Take a Probiotic now if you do not already. Dr Mercola recommends to optimize your vitamin D levels. He further states "vitamin D deficiency is likely the TRUE culprit behind the seasonality of the flu -- not the flu virus itself." Do everything you can to strengthen your immune system.

Before people start getting sick increase your present doses or start taking the nutrients listed below. Get a jump start on building your immunity. None of these nutrients have side effects other than diarrhea with high levels of vitamin C. (Note Liposomal vitamin C has little or no bowel problems in high doses and it has 10 times the absorption rate) These nutrients will help your immune system and over all health. If the flu doesn't materialize you just bought some real cheap health insurance and a stronger immune system. The following nutrient formula was devised by Robert J. Rowan MD.

Take the following if people around you are sick.
- Vitamin D-3 50,000 IU for one week, then 2-3 times weekly for four weeks.
- Vitamin C- 1000mg three times daily( If loose bowels occur reduce dose). Many people including me take this much now. I am going to switch to Liposomal vitamin C for increased absorption and cell penetration.
- Zinc Citrate-50 mg(If you take for more than three weeks take 2 mg copper.)
- Iodide/Iodine (Iodoral) 12.5 mg
- Selenium 200 mg
- Russian Choice Immune (See my web site)
- Colloidal Silver (Ionic is best)
- Probiotics
- Herbal Immune Formula (I am taking Immunex) You might also look at Carnivora (search google or yahoo)

If you develop symptoms add these immediately.
- Vitamin A( not beta carotene) 100,000 units daily for up to one month.
- Sambucol (This is black elderberry) Dr Weil agrees with this.
- Vitamin C Up to one gram every hour (Take liposomal C to avoid bowel problems with this dosage level and increase absorption)
- Miracle Mineral Supplement (28% Sodium Chlorite Solution)

Do not wait for the flu to hit your area. Build your immunity now. Be ready, if it never gets to you or your community all of the products will have strengthen your immune system and that is a good thing. The body can protect and heal itself of this or any virus given the proper tools.

One last thought if the bug does reach your area do not rush to take a vaccine they can be very dangerous and have proved to be ineffective. A new vaccine would not be ready for six months or so in any event. Again Dr Mercola said "but when available they will be ineffective and can lead to crippling paralysis like Guillain-Barré Syndrome just as it did in the 70s."

Iron Pills Can Harm

Many people remember the old "tired blood" advertising claims and still believe that iron pills will help if you suffer from chronic fatigue.

You should not take iron pills without a specific diagnosis. Several studies have shown that iron deficiency can be healthful. Before the bad LDL cholesterol can form plaques in arteries, it must be converted to oxidized LDL and iron causes this reaction. Lack of iron reduces your chances of forming plaques in your arteries and suffering heart attacks and strokes.

Less than 50 percent of the iron in your body is in your red blood cells. Most iron is in your iron reserves in your liver, spleen and other tissues. Your body needs iron to make red blood cells and if your body does not contain enough iron, you will become anemic, but you will not become anemic until you have depleted all your iron reserves. You can be iron deficient but not anemic when you have an adequate supply of red blood cells, but no iron reserves. Iron deficiency does not make you tired unless you are also anemic, but it can tire athletes exercising at their maximum.

Blood iron levels are part of routine blood tests. If your blood iron levels are low and you are not anemic, you need a special test called ferritin to measure iron reserves. If your ferritin is low, your doctor will look for a source of bleeding such as heavy menstruation or bleeding in the intestinal tract. If no serious source is found, you need no treatment unless you are a highly competitive athlete.

Your body has no way to rid itself of excess iron, so it is stored in body tissues, especially the liver, heart, and pancreas. Hemochromatosis is an inherited disorder that causes the body to absorb and store too much iron. It is not common and is easily treated by donating blood, but undiagnosed, it can lead to severe organ damage. This is just one more reason why you should not take iron pills without a specific diagnosis.

My Little Red Book Overview

MY LITTLE RED BOOK is an anthology of stories about first periods, collected from women of all ages from around the world. The accounts range from light-hearted (the editor got hers while water skiing in a yellow bathing suit) to heart-stopping (a first period discovered just as one girl was about to be strip-searched by the Nazis). The contributors include well-known women writers (Meg Cabot, Erica Jong, Gloria Steinem, Cecily von Ziegesar), alongside today's teens. And while the authors differ in race, faith, or cultural background, their stories share a common bond: they are all accessible, deeply honest, and highly informative. Whatever a girl experiences or expects, she'll find stories that speak to her thoughts and feelings.

Ultimately, MY LITTLE READ BOOK is more than a collection of stories. It is a call for a change in attitude, for a new way of seeing periods. In a time when the taboo around menstruation seems to be one of the few left standing, it makes a difficult subject easier to talk about, and helps girls feel proud instead of embarrassed or ashamed. By revealing what it feels like to undergo this experience first hand, and giving women the chance to explain their feelings in their own words, it aims to provide support, entertainment, and a starting point for discussion for mothers and daughters everywhere. It is a book every girl should have. Period.

Nutritional Needs for Thyroid Hormone

The nutritional requirements to support the healthy function of thyroid hormone are poorly understood. A main reason why you may have the symptoms of poor thyroid function is a lack of nutrients that are vital for the normal function of thyroid hormone. Nutrient deficiencies place a major stress on the thyroid gland itself, helping to lock in sluggish and inefficient metabolism of calories.

Various nutrients are needed to form thyroid hormone, activate thyroid hormone, and protect the thyroid and liver during this process.

I have tried to make this easy for people by designing nutritional products that provide the most needed nutrients. Thyroid Helper is a mix of tyrosine, selenium, manganese, guggul, and Ashwaganda. It is our top product for thyroid support. Iosol Iodine is the best iodine supplement you can find. Daily Energy Multiple Vitamin features high levels of co-enzyme B12, folic acid, and B6, along with important krebs cycle bionutrients and magnesium. This type of quality is seldom found in a multiple vitamin. These products form core nutritional support for thyroid function.

Tyrosine

Tyrosine is an amino acid that converts to dopamine and norepinephrine with the help of vitamin B6 and vitamin C. Norepinephrine is a sympathetic nerve neurotransmitter that is the stimulus for your subconscious brain (hypothalamus and pituitary) to activate the production of thyroid hormone in the first place (TRH and TSH).

Brain levels of leptin act as a traffic cop, regulating the amount of norepinephrine allowed to stimulate the production of thyroid (leptin bases this on the adequacy of stored fat - a perception that is often faulty). Norepinephrine-transmitting nerves are also wired directly to the thyroid gland, which act as a catalyst to get the thyroid moving.

Supplemental tyrosine is well known to promote brain activation, mental clarity, and better mood. Tyrosine is also the central molecule of thyroid hormone (four iodine molecules are attached to one tyrosine to make thyroxine, T4).

Iodine

Iodine is absolutely vital for the formation of thyroid hormone in the thyroid gland. Adequate iodine is also needed to block various compounds from binding to the thyroid (fluoride, perchlorate, goitrogens in food). Iodine is also needed to assist the metabolism of estrogen in a healthy way (high estrogen blocks thyroid function) and iodine is needed to assist various hormone receptors throughout the body to work properly. Iodine is essential for brain function and intelligence.

I rely on a product called Iosol Iodine for needed iodine supplementation. I like it because ammonium iodine rapidly dissociates and forms free iodide, the exact form your body needs (1.8 mg a drop). By comparison, Lugols and Iodoral contain the potassium salt of iodine which I don't feel is as efficiently metabolized. Many people use up to 5 drops of Iosol per day (if it can be observed that it helps the person warm up and sustain energy), I would never recommend 25 - 50 mg of a supplement containing potassium iodide.

In fact, I won't put potassium iodide in any supplement I design. One cause of Hashimoto's Thyroiditis is excessive potassium iodine from sea vegetables like kelp, which is how the problem was first discovered. This means that potassium iodine has been shown to clog the thyroid gland and shut it down on too much intake. I have never seen such a problem from Iosol in two decades of use.

Thyroid hormone (T4) is composed of four molecules of iodine attached to one molecule of tyrosine. A lack of either nutrient makes it difficult to form thyroid hormone.

Tired All the Time? Find Out Why You're Always Tired

Do you always find that you're tired all the time and that nothing seems to be able to boost your energy back up? Maybe you haven't considered that there is a deeper underlying cause creating this problem for you. In this article find out why you're always tired and how you can bring back your energy levels so that you're better able to deal with the world!

2 Reasons You're Tired all the Time

Low Thyroid Function: Also known as hypothyroidism, this is a condition where there is a marked weakening of the thyroid which can cause immune dysfunction, weight gain, chronic low energy levels, cold hands and feet and much more. A good start to naturally treating this condition is the use of a supplement known as Iodoral which contains significant levels of iodine which have proven to be able to rejuvenate a fatigued body and weakened thyroid. Do some research on Lugols Iodine, you'll be surprised the success stories it has produced!

Candida Overgrowth: A very common health condition where a yeast that exists in over 90% of the population explodes in numbers in the body, going completely out of control causing numerous health complaints. A chronic fatigued and tired condition is generally directly connected to a Candida overgrowth. The best solution to it is to destroy the overgrowth with anti-fungals and stabilize the health of the body through diet and supplements, while also addressing the root causes that led to its development in the first place.

This may sound like an elaborate plan of action but the benefits of it far outweigh just about anything else you could do to boost your health. By addressing all the factors of your health problems not only will you no longer be tired all the time but you will no longer experience other chronic symptoms you likely also deal with from day to day.

Iodine Deficiency and Thyroid Health

Iodine is one of the most important minerals, especially with regards to thyroid health. Many people with a thyroid condition have an iodine deficiency, and until this deficiency is addressed, there is very little chance of having their health restored through a natural thyroid treatment protocol. The reason for this is because iodine deficiency is necessary for the formation of thyroid hormone. So if someone is deficient in iodine, this frequently will result in a hypothyroid condition.

However, many people with hyperthyroidism also have an iodine deficiency as well. In fact, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune hyperthyroid condition, and I was iodine deficient and therefore had to supplement with iodine. So regardless of what type of thyroid condition you have, it is essential to receive the proper testing to confirm whether or not you are deficient in this extremely important mineral.

Why Are So Many People Iodine Deficient?

There are numerous different reasons why people are deficient in iodine. One of the primary reasons is due to poor farming techniques, which leaves the soil depleted of many different nutrients and minerals, include iodine. Another reason why many people are iodine deficient is because the bread dough conditioners are made with bromide, whereas many years ago they were made with iodine. This is important because bromide competes with iodine, and so by consuming all of these products that contain bromide, it will in turn replace iodine, making people iodine deficient.

Other halogens can also displace iodine, such as fluoride and chloride. And most people are being exposed to these halogens on a regular basis, which is yet another reason why so many people are iodine deficient. So you want to try to do everything you can to minimize your exposure to these toxins.

How To Determine Whether You Have An Iodine Deficiency

As for how you can determine whether you have an iodine deficiency, the most accurate method is through an iodine loading test. This is a urine test that requires you to first take a 50mg iodine/iodide tablet, and then over a 24-hour period it is determined how much iodine is retained. Someone who is iodine deficient will retain a high percentage of the iodine that was consumed. According to those who developed this test, a person who takes this test and has a saturation lower than 90% has an iodine deficiency, and thus is a candidate for iodine supplementation.

Another, less accurate way to determine whether someone has an iodine deficiency is through an Iodine Patch Test. This test requires painting a 2 x 2 inch square patch on the forearm, using a 3% iodine tincture. For someone who isn't iodine deficient, the patch should take over 24 hours to completely disappear. Someone who is mildly deficient will have the patch disappear between 13 and 24 hours. And if someone has the patch disappear in 12 hours or less, they are considered to be iodine deficient.

While I don't recommend the Iodine Patch Test to my patients to diagnose an iodine deficiency, I do advise them to use it as a follow-up procedure. In other words, I'll recommend for someone to begin with both the iodine loading test and at the same time do an Iodine Patch Test, paying more attention to the results of the urine test. But I'll then have them do a follow-up iodine patch test on a monthly basis just to see if there are any significant changes, and then will recommend a follow-up iodine loading test after three months.

Addressing An Iodine Deficiency

For those people with a thyroid condition who have an iodine deficiency, it is not only important to take a quality iodine supplement, but to go about this process slowly. In other words, you don't want to automatically begin taking 25 to 50mg of iodine daily, although some healthcare professionals will recommend this. By the way, for everything you need to know about iodine, I highly recommend reading the book "Iodine, Why You Need It, Why You Can't Live Without It", which is written by Dr. David Brownstein.

When I was diagnosed with an autoimmune thyroid condition, I began by taking one 3mg tablet of Prolamine Iodine, which is an iodine supplement manufactured by a company called Standard Process. I increased the dosage by one tablet each week, and once I was taking eight tablets per day I switched to a product called Iodoral, which enabled me to take a similar dosage, but this comes in 12.5 mg tablets. Both of these iodine supplements are of high quality, and along with incorporating other components of a natural treatment protocol, taking iodine daily helped to restore my health back to normal.

I realize this probably sounds like a lot of iodine to take, and this isn't to suggest that everyone will need to take this much iodine. On the other hand, some people might need to take 50mg of iodine daily to address a severe deficiency. It all depends on how deficient in iodine you are. The good news is that good quality iodine supplements are relatively inexpensive to purchase.

Autoimmune Thyroid Conditions & Iodine Deficiency

If you have an autoimmune thyroid condition, then you might not be able to address your iodine deficiency right away. If you have Graves' Disease then this shouldn't be a problem, unless if you happen to be allergic to iodine, which is rare. On the other hand, someone with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis will be unable to supplement with iodine right away. Taking iodine will actually increase the destruction of the thyroid gland, which is why anyone who has Hashimoto's Thyroiditis will need to address the autoimmune response first.

Of course most endocrinologists and other medical doctors label these conditions as being incurable. So rather than address the immune system component, they will simply put someone on thyroid medication to manage the symptoms. Because of this, more and more people are turning towards natural thyroid treatment methods to restore their health back to normal.

Restoring Your Health Through A Natural Thyroid Treatment Protocol

While addressing an iodine deficiency is important to restore one's health back to normal, often times other factors need to be addressed as well. This is where a natural thyroid treatment protocol comes into play, as this will help to determine any other problematic areas or additional deficiencies you might have that can be contributing to, or in some cases directly causing your thyroid condition.

What's important to understand is that in many cases, the malfunctioning thyroid gland is not the cause of the thyroid condition. This is why just giving thyroid medication to manage the symptoms is often times a big mistake, as in many cases, the actual cause can be detected and corrected. While some people will attempt to self-treat their condition, this usually doesn't lead to optimal results, which is why I recommend that anyone with a thyroid condition consult with a competent natural endocrine doctor. Such a doctor will be able to determine what is causing your thyroid condition, and if possible, put you on a natural treatment protocol to cure the cause.

In summary, an iodine deficiency can directly cause or contribute to the development of a thyroid condition. Taking iodine is obviously important to address such a deficiency, but just remember that other factors can play a role in the development of a thyroid condition, which is why consulting with a competent natural endocrine doctor is usually a good idea, as many thyroid conditions can be cured through a natural treatment protocol. Finally, don't forget that there is an excellent book which discusses iodine deficiency in detail, and while the title might sound boring (Iodine, Why You Need It, Why You Can't Live Without It), the book is actually very interesting and easy to read.

Why Am I Always Cold? - Stop Feeling Cold For Good!

There are many reasons for why you might say "why am I always cold" the main factors however I'll describe below as you may not have considered them and it's very likely your doctors haven't either since the medical system within north America has become a joke to the rest of the world. Here now are some reasons for why you always feel cold.

3 Causes of why you always feel cold

Hypo-Thyroid - A sluggish thyroid can exist and yet blood tests and doctors tests will not indicate it until it goes into the extremes, if you have serious trouble keeping weight off and frequently feel cold I would highly suggest you research Iodoral or Lugols Iodine. That's all I'll say about that. Don't rely on your doctor to heal your body, just suppress symptoms.

Parasites - So this might sound like news to you but a majority of the worlds population are infected with parasites to various degrees. Animals aren't the only ones who need to get de-wormed 2 times per year. If you haven't done a thorough parasite cleanse and you're still exhibiting symptoms such as cold hands and feet then maybe it's time to start.

Candida - Of course the big one that connects the other two together. A suppressed immune system can allow for parasites to gain a foothold in your body and Candida will overgrow in addition. This yeast in approximately 90% of the population is responsible for an extensive list of symptoms including cold hands and feet. It is also a culprit often in creating a thyroid dysfunction in the body. The solution is a thorough Candida cleanse. I suggest you take a Candida test or questionnaire to determine whether or not you appear to be suffering from Candida.

Always Have Cold Hands? What Causes Cold Feet and Hands and How to Fix It

Do you frequently find that you always have cold hands or feet? If so there could be various reasons for this that your doctor has either not notified you of or is simply not aware of. Always having cold feet and/or hands is an indicator symptom of a greater issue at hand that is impacting your overall body temperature. This could be from poor circulation, anemia or another cause as I'll discuss.

3 Common Causes when you Always Have Cold Hands

Parasites: Much more common than you would expect, parasites are not limited to 3rd world countries only. They frequently affect people in 1st world nations such as the USA. They feed on the nutrition that should enter into your cells, causing a mal-absorption syndrome which very commonly mimics anemia and conditions where the body feels cold and as though it's malnourished. Most tests for parasites are in-effective and doctors when asked about them will for the most part only laugh, but it's no coincidence that so many people when they do a thorough parasite cleanse feel 10 times better and symptoms such as chronic cold hands just disappears.

Hypo-Thyroidism: This is another situation where the perception in the modern medical community is that you need to score very low on thyroid tests to indicate an under functioning thyroid. The reality is that you can score below average on their tests and they would tell you you're fine when in reality this is the cause of your symptoms such as fatigue and cold hands and feet. I would highly suggest if you always have cold hands and feet that you research a product called Iodoral and start using it.

Candida: At the root of many health conditions is a fungus that grows in over 90% of the population, the reality is that this yeast will only cause health problems once the immune system is weakened or the good bacteria in the body is negatively affected, allowing the yeast to overgrow in the body. Symptoms experienced are vast and can include cold hands and feet, sinus congestion, asthma, arthritic symptoms, chronic fatigue, rashes with no explanation, suppressed immune system which leads to frequent colds and depression/anxiety disorders. This only scratches the surface and if any of these symptoms jump out at you I'd suggest you take a Candida test to determine just how badly Candida appears to be affecting your health.

Breast Cancer in Women With Type 2 Diabetes - Iodine and Breast Health!

As you know, breast cancer is considered to be epidemic among women over fifty whether or not they have Type 2 diabetes. It's still not clear whether hormone replacement therapy (HRT) increases your risk of breast cancer but there is actually more consensus in the medical research community over this issue than many others. That could be because the incidence of breast cancer in Western countries dramatically rises anyway after menopause... whether you are on HRT or not.

Scientists have found a clear connection between Type 2 diabetes and estrogen-stimulated breast cancer in women. Fortunately, one of the easiest ways to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer is simply to consume adequate amounts of iodine.

Iodine keeps the immune system healthy. It stimulates the growth of protective cells in the mucosa of the mouth, stomach, vagina, and nipples. It also keeps the breast healthy. The cells lining the milk ducts of the breast, where most breast cancers originate, actually have an 'iodine pump' in them, allowing them to take in this nutrient as it is available and when it is needed.

The importance of iodine in breast health is not just strengthening the immune system. It's also important for keeping the linings of the ducts of the breasts from responding to estrogen. Estrogen stimulates the growth of breast tissue, both healthy and cancerous. When the effects of estrogen are blocked, the body's self-defense systems have more opportunities to stop cancer even before it is diagnosed.

Physiologist James Wilson estimated that about 30 per cent of women have at least microscopic breast cell carcinomas at any given time, and that over 99 per cent of women will never know they have the disease... because various immune defense and DNA repair mechanisms stop the cancer before it spreads.

How can women be sure they are getting enough iodides for breast health? There are two basic ways. One is take a supplement called Iodoral. A 12.5 mg tablet every other day is enough.

The other way to be sure of getting enough of this vital element for breast health is to eat kelp, dulse, and other sea vegetables. A single serving four or five days a week provides the body with all the iodides it needs.

Often women with Type 2 diabetes take other medications including thyroid replacement hormones (Synthroid or Armour Thyroid), or if you have high blood pressure or you take medication for arrhythmia, see your physician before adding iodine to your diet. But know that iodine is often the missing element in successful nutritional programs for maintaining breast health.

Iodine Supplements Vs Iodized Salt

Is the use of iodized salt enough to provide our bodies with the iodide it needs for optimal health or must we use an iodine supplement?

Let's look at a little history and some basic chemistry.

Morton added iodide to their salt in 1924 to prevent an epidemic of enlarged thyroid glands (goiter) due to an iodide deficiency. Even though the result of including iodide in salt was successful science has yet to establish what amount of iodide human beings require for optimal health. Our MDR (minimum daily requirement) of 150 mcg is enough to prevent goiter and cretinism but not nearly enough to maximize thyroid hormone production or to protect us from other disease conditions related to iodine and iodide deficiencies.

Many studies (WHO & National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) have shown that the general population of both the U.S. and worldwide are suffering from an insufficiency of these two essential trace elements. So the first question is can we rely on iodized salt to provide us with our daily needs for maximum health?

Iodized Salt

A teaspoon of iodized salt contains the following:

  • 2,300 mg of sodium (Our U.S. Department of Health and Human Sciences recommends that a healthy adult should not consume more than 2,300 mg of sodium. If they have high blood pressure, kidney disease, diabetes, are black, or if they are middle-aged or older they should not consume more than 1,500 mg. The 'Surgeon General's Report on Health Promotion and Disease Prevention' of 1979 even condemned salt.

  • 2,700 mg of chloride

  • 300 mcg of iodide (0.3 mg)

From this information and taking into consideration our intake of salt added to prepared and restaurant foods iodized salt may not be the best and healthiest source of iodide.

Iodine & Iodide

The next logical question then is how much of these two trace elements do we require for health, not just to sustain life, but for vital health.

There's a general consensus about vitamin and mineral requirements yet with iodine and iodide there's a huge gap between physicians when considering a safe and effective dose. And both sides have very convincing research to support their point of view.

The conservatives believe that all the nutrients we need can be found in our food. This theory may have been true 60 years ago but our consumption of foods grown in nutrient depleted soils and manufactured foods has greatly reduced the essential nutrients we require. The conservative view also does not take into account people's reluctance to use table salt.

Then there is the other extreme, physicians prescribing upwards of 50 mg of iodine and iodide per day. That's 50,000 mcg compared with 150 mcg, 300 times the MDR. There may be some initial benefits to flooding the body with this much iodine and iodide but taken long-term there will be consequences.

Words of Caution

I used to be one of those high-dose prescribers until I repeated lab tests focusing on thyroid hormones. I was horrified by the results. I immediately stopped prescribing iodine and iodide and dove into the research myself.

The endocrine system's reaction to high doses is a little too deep for this article but the primary result of high dosing is inflammation of the thyroid and over years the increased risk of a condition called Hashimoto's.

One patient, before starting her on high-dose iodine and iodide, tested negative for Hashimoto's but within 6 months her Hashimoto's test turned positive.

Research

I was surprised to find so much research on these two trace elements coming up with over 100 articles on their use in the prevention and treatment of numerous diseases.

Some of the research indicated a safe and effective dose while many articles agreed that people around the world, and not in just the less developed countries, are not getting anywhere near what they require.

Several articles pointed to between 3 and 6 mg a day as being safe. I tend to stand on the conservative side, recommending 3mg of iodine and iodide per day. This moderate dose slowly saturates the tissues and because it's not the 'flood-the-system' high-dose approach the body will easily excrete what it does not need.

Which Iodine Supplement?

In products from the sea nature provides the combination of both iodine and iodide. With supplements you'll find the ingredient is often only iodine. It will also be the elemental form and not made from food.

This means that most iodine supplements do not include iodide which is absolutely necessary for our thyroid to make its hormones. So to me supplements with iodine alone are out.

Iodine and Iodide Supplements

The most popular combination supplements (Iodoral & IodinePlus-2) fall into the category of the high-dose, usually 12.5 mg (12,500 mcg), and I recommend avoiding them even if your physician is doing lab tests. You can't predict when you'll reach that saturation threshold and start having thyroid inflammation.

Kelp Tablets

Kelp contains both iodine and iodide. There have been a number of survey studies showing how the cultures consuming higher amounts of seafood and sea vegetation have a much lower incidence of various illnesses including cancer. Yet these studies are from the 60's and 70's.

In the last 40 to 50 years our oceans have become our industrial waste sewage system with kelp, chlorella, plankton and reef life our only means of preserving the purity of our waters.

I recently approached a very large and well-known herbal supplement manufacturing company (Gaia Herbs) to have them formulate a kelp concentrate to deliver 3 mg of iodine and iodide. After a week of their research they informed me that they would be unable to make this product because the concentration of arsenic in the 3 mg dose would exceed California's limit of acceptable levels.

Besides, these articles of the 60's and 70's studied the 'nutritional' intake of various cultures and even though they cite iodine and iodide being the primary variable for improving health we need to take into consideration all the nutrients in their diet, selenium being second in line.

My Recommendation

Obviously, some attention needs focus on iodine and iodide supplementation to secure the health of you and your loved ones. Here are a few suggestions.

  1. Use sea salt for cooking and for flavor. It contains many trace minerals which we no longer find in our produce. Sea salt does not contain nearly enough iodide. In fact the concentration of iodide in iodized salt is about 45 times that of sea salt.

  2. Use the combination of iodine and iodide at 3 mg a day for an adult, about half this for a child. The ratio is about 1.25 mg of iodine and 1.75 mg of potassium iodide.

  3. Always, always take selenium when taking any iodine product. I suggest between 200 and 400 mcg in the methionine form. Selenium plays hundreds of important roles in health and especially with thyroid hormones.

You'll find more information on the safe uses of iodine and iodide on my blog while I continue to contribute to the ezine platform.

All the best,

Dr. Alexander Haskell, N.D.

Type 2 Diabetes and Breast and Thyroid Health in Women - Increase Your Intake of Iodine!

Over the past 40 years, millions of North American women have experienced a nutritional condition once completely wiped out... iodine deficiency. Women who have Type 2 diabetes in particular, but many women in general, suffer painful fibrocystic changes in the breasts that simple iodine supplementation usually takes away.

The reason iodine consumption in the USA and Canada has fallen precipitously since the middle of the twentieth century is bakeries that once used iodine compounds to bleach flour now use bromine compounds. This greatly reduces the amount of iodine in the diet, and, even worse, it adds an anti-iodine compound to everyday eating. Bromine attaches to receptor sites in the thyroid that otherwise would be receiving the iodides it needs to make thyroid hormone.

When thyroid hormone levels are reduced, all the problems associated with Type 2 diabetes get that much worse. There can be inexplicable weight gain, inexplicable high blood sugar levels, and a general feeling of being tired all the time. And in women, there can also be inexplicable breast pain followed by fibrocystic changes in the breast.

When breast pain is caused by deficiency in the iodides provided by food, there is a distinctive rhythm with the menstrual cycle, (in women who have not experienced age-related or surgical menopause). This deficiency causes estrogen to latch on to more receptors in the breast, causing fibrous tissues to grow during the first half of the period, before ovulation. In women who have experienced menopause, the pain may occur all the time.

Two studies have found a keen role of this overlooked nutrient in women's breast health. One study found that women who take it overcome fibrocystic breast pain in 70% of cases. Another study found that the dosage needed for this is just 6 mg a day. That's a great deal more than is needed to prevent goiter, but it's still not a lot of iodine. That's just a 12.5 mg Iodoral tablet every other day, or a single serving of kelp or other sea vegetables every day. It's very easy to use iodine to control breast pain.

And it is very important for women who have Type 2 diabetes to take their Iodoral or to eat their sea veggies. Especially as they cut out white flour and carbohydrates, and as they make their diets more adventurous by using exotic salts, women just don't get the iodides they need. There's just one caveat.

Once in a great while women experience a condition known as iodism. This is really a reaction to the release of bromides that had been occupying receptor sites in thyroid tissue. All you need to do is to reduce your dosage of iodine.

And women who are on thyroid replacement hormone may need less Synthroid or Armour Thyroid, or both. Women who don't know that extra iodides are causing symptoms such as heart palpitations can become quite alarmed... if you take thyroid replacement hormones, speak with your doctor before taking the supplement.

Thyroid Function is Directly Related to Iodine Consumption

Thyroid problems have become rampant in the modern world, thanks to greedy manufacturers. Between dumping poisonous sodium fluoride waste (from aluminum can and weapons manufacturing) into our toothpaste, soda drinks and public water supplies, and chlorine (another poison) into our water, cleaning products and medicines, the thyroid has very little chance of functioning properly.

Fluorine, Chlorine, and Bromine (which is also added to sodas and medicines), iodine and astatine are 'halogenated compounds' all of which can take the place of iodine. These extremely reactive oxidizing agents don't exist by themselves very long-they must combine with other substances to be stable. Because they are highly reactive, they tend to bond very strongly with other molecules (Teflon is fluorine bonded with carbon, table salt is chlorine bonded with sodium, bleach is chlorine bonded with sodium, and PCB's are polychlorinated biphenyls).

Here's the problem: the thyroid, a gland found in the neck area, needs iodine to function properly. All those other halogenated elements can bind to the same areas that iodine can. So what do you think happens when a person drinks a lot of sodas every day...uses a lot a table salt...or spends a lot of time in or around swimming pools? Right-they get their thyroid iodine receptors filled up with bromine, chlorine, and fluorine. That means thyroid hormone is not produced properly.

Since thyroid hormones are necessary for so many metabolic functions other than just producing heat in the body-such as: protein, carbohydrate, and fat metabolism, protein synthesis, catecholamine sensitivity, and some kind of neuronal activity (thought to be involved in hibernation cycles)--the lack of thyroid function is a serious matter. T3 (Triiodothyronine), the active form of thyroid hormone in the blood, has iodine in it. That would be a very different compound if it was trichlorthyronine (which has been found to cause angina and depression of serum protein-bound iodine) or tribromothyronine (which, while effective, is about 10% less effective than triiodothyronine).

The difference between amounts of iodine consumed in the USA vs. Japan is astounding: 240micrograms vs. 12 milligrams daily. Health experts are discovering links between the high incidence of breast cancer in the USA and low incidence of breast and other cancers in Japan. Iodine supplementation was used to reduce fibrocystic breast disease and to increase apoptosis (programmed cell death, which is important to destroy cancer cells that are formed naturally in the body) as well as prevent goiter.

Some of the other disease found to respond favorably to iodine supplementation include: fibromyalgia, uterine fibroids, diabetes, migraines, and some skin conditions. It is also used to remove toxins like bromine and fluorine from the body (but high doses will cause skin eruptions as these are removed). Dr. Guy Abraham, who started The Iodine Project in 1996, conducted clinical studies on 50mg daily of Iodoral (the pill form of Lugol's Solution) and determined that iodine sufficiency had been reached when 90% of the dose was excreted in the urine. He also found that up to 1,500mg could be contained in the body without significant side effects. Dr. Abraham concluded that taking 100 times the recommended daily dose is safe and effective when combined with a good diet, selenium, magnesium and omega-3 fatty acids. (check out http://www.theiodineproject.webs.com/ for more information about The Iodine Project

It is a fairly simple thing to add iodine to one's daily food intake now, given both liquid and pill supplements (yeah, it tastes really bad). The minimal trace amounts we consume in canned foods, iodized salt and seafood is usually enough to prevent goiter but can be useless if the iodine is displaced by the other halogenated elements mentioned above. While overdose of iodine can cause heart palpitations, over-excitement and the like, it is pretty easy to determine when that is happening. Under utilization of iodine is usually more subtle and can result in a sub-clinical hypothyroidism that leaves people fatigued, depressed and sick...and can't be diagnosed with a thyroid blood test. For further information on how to check for sub-clinical hypothyroidism, check out the other articles in this series.

It is estimated that over 80% of the population of the USA is suffering from sub-clinical hypothyroidism. No wonder so many people are falling asleep behind the wheel of the car, listless at work, losing hair and gaining weight.

This is Your Endocrine System - The Thyroid

Our most well-known endocrine gland is the thyroid. Not nearly as well known is the fact that half the population has thyroid problems, mostly undiagnosed or mistreated.

The thyroid, a butterfly-shaped gland located by your Adam's apple, controls metabolism and affects everything else. You may know about the weight problems, hair loss, brain fog, depression, extreme fatigue, etc. that accompany an underperforming thyroid gland. Some of you have experienced the living on the edge sensation of an overactive thyroid.

Hyper and hypo share a lot of the same symptoms, but hypo people generally feel like a lump of mush that doesn't want to move, while hyper people feel tired, but wired.

One sure thing about thyroid problems is you never lack for a boatload of symptoms. One reference book listed slightly more than 300 symptoms for hypothyroidism alone. Is it any wonder, then, that doctors don't want to hear about them?

Doctors prefer blood tests to symptoms. Which isn't a surprise considering they have only a few minutes per visit to figure things out. So who could complain-if the tests worked. Which they don't.

The gold standard test-the TSH-came to us based on a vote of endocrinologists, not science. They keep moving the goal posts to make things come out right, but that doggone test won't cooperate. Never mind. Full speed ahead. And millions of people drag through life because doctors won't listen to their symptoms, and they 'fail' the TSH test.

One form of hypothyroidism, inherited from mothers, never passes the TSH-or any other test. Type 2 hypothyroidism, as it's called, is all about symptoms. The tests have nothing to do with anything, so those patients, maybe a majority of hypothyroid people, don't get treated.

Low thyroid function, whatever its cause, leads to heart attacks, fibromyalgia, auto-immune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, adrenal failure, and on, and on. All added, of course, to the pile of symptoms you start with.

Thyroid problems require prompt and proper treatment to save the day. The TSH test guarantees that most people won't get it.

Worse, when doctors do treat hypothyroidism, they compound the problem by treating it with Synthroid or one of its ugly generic cousins. Our bodies aren't so keen on synthetics that don't look like the real thing, and synthetic thyroid, lacking four out of the five parts of natural thyroid, doesn't look anything like the real thing. And it causes allergic reactions in lots of people.

So you won't get better, but your doctor will say you're fine or prescribe an antidepressant, which won't help.

And if your thyroid is overactive? Doctors usually remove overactive thyroid glands so patients can become hypothyroid and receive the standard bogus treatment for that. Then they get to yearn for the edge they used to live on.

Did you know that Iodoral (iodine/iodide) (Lugol's Solution is the liquid version) reverses hyperthyroidism? Helps a ton with hypothyroidism, too. But doctors will warn you never to take any form of iodine lest you kill yourself. Sigh. Well, at least they're right about iodized salt; that doesn't have such a good track record.

I've been dealing with this mess pretty much all my life. Tough sledding doesn't begin to describe it.

But this information age opens the floodgates to good information. Including mine-thirty-plus years of research coming at you.
